Nestled in the Ken Caryl Valley, this exclusive 12,000 square-foot estate, built in 1914, stands as one of the first major homesteads in Southwest Denver. A Stroll Through History
The Manor House's story began when John Charles Shaffer purchased 2,660 acres of what would later become the Ken-Caryl Ranch. Inspired by the colonial style, he envisioned a summer retreat that would become the nucleus of a millionaire's colony. The renowned architect Edbrooke, famous for his work on Denver landmarks, was commissioned to bring this vision to life.
The resulting masterpiece comprised over 8,000 square feet, boasting 20 rooms, six baths, and an 80-foot-long living room with mirrored fireplaces. The dining room featured a picture window framing spectacular views of the Front Range, creating an ambiance akin to a living painting.
Presidential Connections and Distinguished Guests
The Shaffers' connections reached the highest echelons of society, hosting Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, and Warren Harding. The Manor House became a gathering place for industrial chieftains, actors, musicians, and other prominent figures of the era. The 110-foot flagpole, a beacon visible from Denver, symbolized an invitation to join the Shaffers for grand celebrations.
